Japanese School Children's Aspirations
Japan’s synthetic and man-made leather manufacturer Kuraray commissions an annual survey of the hopes and aspirations of both Japanese children, who are about to start school, and their parents.
Although the results maybe somewhat predictable, what makes it especially interesting is the conservative nature of the responses. The survey was based on 4000 replies of boys and girls. For boys, their most popular choice of vocation was “sportsman”, followed by “workman”, “policeman”, “driver”, and the ubiquitous “fireman”. For girls it was “bakery”, “florist”, “performer” and “teacher”. For parents, their expectations for their sons were “sportsman” or “government official” almost equally, by a significant margin over “doctor” and then “company employee”. Parents' hopes for their daughter were “bakery”, “nurse”, “public servant”, “teacher”.
